Go into your trance

Trance work did not come naturally to me. I did have one mind blowing experience with spontaneous trance in my early 20s. But that was it. For years. I thought trance work was cool and all. I just never had the time to make it a part of my life. Then I hit my 40s. I had the call to Asatru. And I knew right away I wanted to become a Vitki. That meant some trance work if I wanted to be well rounded. That’s when I started making an effort to achieve trance in earnest.

At first I was just meditating. Trying to get some control of my very active monkey mind. It took quite a while to achieve anything resembling a receptive mind. But I was finally able to quiet things down to a manageable rumbling. I had no real intention at this point. I just wanted to get to a place where I could calm my mind.   After some effort I could tell the random thoughts I was busy right now.

Once I had a reasonable grip on this skill I started adding the intention to the proceedings that I wanted to go into trance. This was more difficult than it may sound. Getting myself to focus on the intention took longer for me than I’d hoped it would.  Especially telling the random thoughts that would occur that I would get back to them later, right now I’m focusing on something else.

Quickly I came to the realization that I would never be able to totally clear my mind. Empty head just wasn’t in the cards for me. But after some practice I became adept at releasing the thoughts as they occurred. I learned to not allow myself the time when meditating to obsess. Release became my mantra.

After a time I started noticing a shift in my consciousness as I meditated. I would slowly drift into a place that felt just like I was about to fall asleep. But there was a distinct energy that was like a buzzing. I knew I wasn’t literally just falling asleep. There was way too much energy coming through for that to be the case. I was experiencing a heightened awareness. I was in a trance!

So I had figured out how to go into trance. It didn’t take long to figure out that there are different levels of trance. The type of trance that I use most frequently is a working trance. That’s where my consciousness has shifted but I’m still able to perform tasks like ritual or rune readings.  Then there’s the deep trance that I achieve for major personal work on my spiritual state of mind.

All of these trance states I can get to more reliably with the aid of a drum. Drumming puts me in that trance space almost every time. Drums are important tools for me!

So that’s a bit of my trance experience. It’s brought my Vitki work to new levels of competence. It allows me to do seidr. It deepens my understanding of the runes. It has opened doors for me that I never even imagined existed. It is now a part of who I am.
